Joseph Egbunike, a Deputy Inspector-General and the head of the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), has died. In the late hours of Tuesday, March 8th, Egbunike collapsed inside his Abuja office.
Egbunike was the head of the Nigeria Police Force’s highest investigative unit until his Death.
Investigation and prosecution of serious and complex criminal cases both inside and outside the country are among its responsibilities. The department is also in charge of coordinating crime investigations and prosecutions across the entire force.
Despite indictments by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, Egbunike investigated suspended police chief Abba Kyari in late 2021 but did not indict him. In July, Egbunike was charged with contempt for allegedly disobeying a Federal High Court order issued by the Enugu Judicial Division.
