Femi Falana, SAN, would be joining the presidential candidates of the African Action Congress and the Social Democratic Party, Omoyele Sowore and Adewole Adebayo, respectively, as well as a slew of others, to storm the memorial to late human rights lawyer and activist, Gani Fawehinmi.
On Monday, the 13th memorial to the celebrated lawyer, who died on September 5, 2009, will be held in Lagos State’s Ikeja neighborhood.
Chief Fawehinmi, a Nigerian author, publisher, social critic, and politician until his death, is remembered fondly for his activism and pro bono legal representation of the common man.
Fawehinmi became a SAN in September 2001, and was awarded the Senior Advocate of Masses in Obafemi Awolowo University in 1988, among other international awards.
Fawehinmi was arrested and imprisoned several times during his activism by successive governments under military rule.
Others attending the Monday event include Debo Adeniran, Chairman of the Centre for Anti-corruption and Open Leadership; Gbenga Komolafe, General Secretary of the Federation of Informal Workers of Nigeria; and others.
The program, which was divided into three lectures, had the following themes: (1) A reflection on 23 years of Nigeria’s electoral system and democracy; which way forward? (2) Fuel subsidy regime: Oil industry corruption and the way out (3) The Nigerian educational system is in crisis, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities is on indefinite strike.
