The Netherlands qualified for the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar and silenced their critics with a convincing 3-1 victory over a spirited USA side.

First-half goals from Memphis Depay and Daley Blind took the Dutch into half time with a two goal cushion that they maintained until Haji Wright pulled one back for the USA in the 76th minute.

The Americans threatened to draw level in the closing stages but it was the Netherlands who had the final say, when Daley Blind’s chipped cross was put away by an unmarked Denzel Dumfries at the back post.

The Dutch move on to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of tonight’s clash between Argentina and Australia.
