Mallam Saliu Mustapha, the APC contender for the Kwara Central senatorial seat in 2023, has promised a prize worth around $20,000 for the Kwara United football team competing in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Prior to United’s first game on Saturday, Mustapha, who is also the Turaki of Ilorin, made this announcement. On Sunday in Lagos, the team is scheduled to play AS Douanes of the Niger Republic.
The APC flag bearer said in a statement posted on his various social media accounts that the players’ performance in the final home game of the 2021/2022 Nigerian Professional football league national team was a factor in the choice to reward them.
“You might remember that, at the management of Kwara United FC’s request, I funded a “open gate” so that fans and football aficionados in Kwara state could attend the team’s final home game in the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for free.
Expectedly, the Nigerian team’s beloved Harmony Warriors won their match 3-0 to advance to the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
“I am glad to offer a financial award for the team ahead of their first round match against AS Douanes of Niger Republic on Sunday in Lagos as a result of their exceptional performances so far.”
In addition to offering the players an additional $10,000 if they make it out of the group stage and a larger cash incentive if they win the competition, I am committing $500 for each goal the team scores against the Nigeriens.
According to sports pundits, the prize would likely exceed $20,000, or about N12,000,000 in Naira.
Similarly, Mustapha said that sufficient transportation plans were being prepared to convey supporters and fans for free to Lagos.

In addition, I’ve told my staff to work with the Kwara United Supporters’ Club to arrange for enough transportation for anyone who would want to watch the game in person in Lagos but can’t. The contingents will also receive complimentary regular tickets.
“This is my small way of assisting Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq in his mission to constantly improve Kwara via athletics and other endeavors. I believe that this financial incentive would spur the Kwara United FC squad to greatness, which has been their defining characteristic for many years, and help them represent Kwara and Nigeria in the continental competition.”
“This Sunday, September 11 at 9 a.m., at the Mobolaji Johnson stadium in Onikan, I implore all soccer-loving Nigerians in Lagos and the surrounding areas to come and support our team, making the return leg in Niamey on September 18 a formality.”
