British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II is dead, Buckingham Palace has announced

 

She was born Mary Alexander Elizabeth on April 21, 1926 to the Duke and Duchess of York.

 

Being the daughter of the second son of King George V, Elizabeth’s chances of becoming monarch were low, until the abdication of her uncle King Edward VIII who abandoned the throne to marry American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, paving way for the reign of her father, King George V.

 

She married Prince Phillip, the late Duke of Edinburgh on November 20, 1947, giving birth to four children; Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

 

She ascended the British throne on February 6, 1962, while in Kenya due to the passing of her father King George VI. She would eventually surpass the Queen Victoria to become the longest-serving British monarch in history.
