…tasks residents to shun dumping of refuse on water ways

The Kwara State Ministry of Environment has commended the efforts of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in creating permanent solution to the perennial flooding in Ilorin, capital of the state.

This was according to a press statement signed by the commissioner of the ministry, Hon. Remilekun Banigbe and made available to the press, yesterday.

The ministry therefore appeals to members of the public to join government’s efforts to prevent flooding and loss of lives and properties.

“In this regard, the Ministry calls on the citizens to avoid illegal and indiscriminate refuse dump and blockage of water ways/right of way in any part of the state.

“The ministry is elated to note that the longstanding perennial flooding within the Unity Obbo Road axis of Ilorin metropolis has stopped. This is due to the untiring efforts of the Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq administration, which finally led to the ongoing dredging/channelisation of the Asa River after many years of palliatives.

“Notwithstanding, these great efforts can be better complemented when citizens avoid arbitrary dump of refuse on water ways and road median. That way, we can together make perennial flooding a thing of the past in our state, including in the capital city Ilorin” the commissioner said.

Similarly, the Ministry of Environment urges people residing around water banks or flood plains to kindly vacate such dangerous areas for safety reasons.

This is especially necessary in view of the recent warnings of impending flooding by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

Signed:

Mrs Remilekun Banigbe

Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Kwara State.
