In preparation for the high-level events of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived in New York.
President Buhari reportedly landed at the JF Kennedy International Airport in New York at at 6.20 p.m. local time, according to the UN Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Among those who greeted the president were Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, and Dr. Mrs. Uzoma Emenike, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States.
The 77th session’s opening theme is “A watershed moment: Transformative solutions to interconnected challenges.” It began on Tuesday, September 13.
The conflict in Ukraine, the global energy crisis, climate change, and containing the COVID-19 pandemic will all be major subjects of discussion at the UNGA in 2022.
Buhari is anticipated to deliver Nigeria’s National Statement at the High-Level Summit on Transforming Education’s opening session and Leaders Roundtable on Monday.
He will also speak during Thematic Session 4 of the summit, which will focus on how education is being transformed by technology.
On Tuesday, Buhari will be present for the UNGA General Debate’s opening ceremony, at which UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and General Assembly President Csaba Krös will declare the debate to be open.
He is anticipated to attend the opening ceremony as the head of the Nigerian delegation alongside Geoffrey Onyeama, the foreign affairs minister of Nigeria, Prof. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, and other important Nigerian delegates.
Additionally, he will deliver a speech that same day at Transforming Education in Africa: Past, Present, and Future.
Buhari will speak to the General Assembly for the first time on Wednesday, the second day of the General Debate.
Around 9 am (around 2 pm Nigerian time), he would give Nigeria’s statement to the other world leaders during the morning session.
Additionally, he will be present at Africa’s New Public Health Order: Rejuvenating the Global Health Security Agenda and the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change meeting.
In a similar vein, Buhari will go to the American Museum of Natural History to a reception hosted by Vice President Joe Biden.
The President is scheduled to attend high-level meetings on the Sahel and a bilateral meeting with the Nigeria International Economic Partnership Forum on Thursday.
Buhari will also be present at the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government’s Extraordinary Session.
The President of Nigeria will be present at the High-Level Breakfast Meeting on Reviving Multilateralism and Achieving Comprehensive Reform of the UN Security Council Commemorating 15 Years of L.69 on Friday.
On the same day, he will also take part in the official launch of Nigeria’s Integrated National Financing Framework.
