The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced plans to award the All Progressives Congress candidate in the forthcoming Kwara Central Senatorial election, Mallam Saliu Mustapha and a host of others for their contributions to the education sector at its 40th anniversary.

The awards, according to the students’ body, will be presented at the event which will be graced by dignitaries, including top public office holders, ex-officials and traditional rulers.

Our correspondent gathered that Mustapha’s award had been communicated earlier in a letter of notification dated July 25 and signed by the NANS President, Sunday Asefon.

Asefon said the APC candidate is one of those that the association deemed should be recognised for the unique contributions to educational development in Nigeria

“The organisation through the thick and thin has continued to strive and thrive on the sacrifices of our heroes past, some of whom paid the supreme sacrifice in the struggle for the emancipation of the Nigerian students and thereby laying the template for outstanding leadership.

In recognition of these sacrifices, our struggles over the years, and our successes; we have decided to celebrate our 40th anniversary to honour our heroes past, celebrate the unique contributions of individuals to the evolution and development of our union, recognize the exceptional leadership and strides of individuals to educational development in Nigeria of which you are one, retrospect on our failures and weaknesses and more importantly discuss and suggest solutions to the disintegrations in the public tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” the letter read in parts.

The apex students’ body’s recognition comes weeks after Mustapha, through the Saliu Mustapha Foundation (SMF) announced plans to sponsor hundreds of students of gifted but less privileged students on scholarship in all the wards in Ilorin Emirate.

Also in May, the Turaki of Ilorin, donated five million naira for a library project in the Kwara State University (KWASU).
